Basically an association is like a Foundation and different from a company in not having profit independent of the goals of the association. However, it is different from a foundation in being more democratic in its structure and mode of decision making – the highest decision making authority in the organisation is the annual general meeting of members. A foundation is set up by founders who decide about the board and can change the board at their will – as expressed in the foundation statue. Some companies are like associations in having a democratic structure – for example employees are shareholders, like Starbucks in USA, or in terms of transparency of information – some companies choose to publish internally all salary information for example, making information much more democratic.
