A condominium is like a housing cooperative – an organization set up to manage a group of properties, where there are necessarily areas like staircases, heating systems etc. – which are common and cannot be maintained individually. However, the individual flat owners have full ownership of their own flats – usually marked by their having a share in the ownership for the ground as well as the flat where they live. The decision making structure is less democratic – for example, voting rights are in proportion to the area owned by a given owner (like a listed company) – and not simply ‘one flat – one vote’, as with a housing cooperative.
